Easing Restrictions

"Ze plane, ze plane"

- Tattoo, Fantasy Island

We got a much needed re stock recently when parks staff and contractors flew in to do some maintenance. We put in a small order including chocolate, wine and dishwashing liquid and were very grateful for all three. All other food supplies are ok, although getting low. After three months of a fairly repetitive menu we are now excitedly researching the best pub meal near the Melbourne airport to make the most of eased restrictions knowing that once we arrive in SA we will be heading into quarantine for 14 days.

It’s been bloody cold and pretty breezy lately but we finished off last week with a string of blue skies and calm weather. We had another attempt at fishing and cray-ing at Garden Cove which was sadly fruitless, but, we did spot another group of dolphins playing close to shore.

Weeding sea spurge in the dunes, updating fire safety signs, setting up a new visitor information centre and ongoing track maintenance has kept us busy. We have also enjoyed more hikes, fires, BBQ’s, beach combing, and sunsets. A 5:45am hike to the lighthouse gave us an incredible panoramic view of the sun rising over the island and was a great way to begin week 12 on Deal.

The Geese have started to mate and should soon be laying their eggs and many of the wallabies appear to have bulging pouches - unfortunately we will miss seeing the young hatch and emerge. We regularly spot sea eagles and other birds of prey circling above and the penguins at night are as loud as ever. We are frequently amazed just how far up the cliffs we spot penguin burrows.

We have 2 weeks left on the island with plans to fly us out directly to Essendon on June 4th (weather dependent), where we will overnight before catching a flight home. We are looking forward to catching up with everyone very soon (from a safe distance of course).

First human contact in many days - not too much social distancing going on between the plane and Dan in this one.

Sunrise at the lighthouse.

There are surprisingly very few shells on the beaches of Deal (but loads of cuttlefish). Occasionally there are nautilus shells.

Warming up with a restock of wine by the fire

Wall paper in the attic rooms of the museum is made up of pages of very old newspapers and magazines.

Hot pink sunset.

We set up a new info centre in the old meteorology room

Looking between Erith and Dover Islands - you can see the sunset hitting Wilsons Promontory in the distance.
